Surfer SEO is a strong tool for SEO teams who want to write and optimize content themselves. If you’re a business owner who just wants to show up in Google and AI answers without doing the work, RankGPT is the better fit.
In this review we break down every Surfer module, its 2026 pricing, who it’s really built for, and how it compares to RankGPT. Full disclosure: RankGPT is our product. We’ve kept the Surfer facts accurate and linked to the sources so you can check them yourself.
The short version
- Surfer SEO costs $49 to $299 a month (billed yearly). It tracks your AI visibility, audits your pages and grades your writing. You still do the writing, editing and publishing.
- RankGPT starts at $249 a month. It tracks your AI rankings and writes and publishes 30 optimized posts a month for you. It also builds the citations that help AI models recommend you.
- Pick Surfer if you have an in-house SEO team that wants hands-on control.
- Pick RankGPT if you want the results without the work.
What is Surfer SEO?
Surfer SEO is a content optimization platform that started as a Google SEO tool and now also targets AI search. It now lives at surfer.ai (surferseo.com redirects there). Surfer says it’s used by “150,000+ marketers, agencies, and SEOs.”
Surfer made its name with the Content Editor, which scores your writing against top-ranking pages as you type. Through 2026 it has added AI search features: an AI Tracker for ChatGPT and Gemini, brand sentiment, a Mention Gap report and an MCP connection for AI agents.
One thing hasn’t changed. Surfer is a tool you operate. It tells you what to fix and what to write, and your team does the work.
Surfer SEO features
Surfer groups its platform into four main modules, plus an MCP connection for AI tools.
1. Monitor AI Search Visibility (AI Tracker)
This module checks whether ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI tools mention your brand. You get:
- A visibility score, mention rate and average position across AI models
- Mention Gap: sites where competitors are mentioned and you aren’t
- Sentiment analysis: whether AI answers describe your brand positively
- Fan-out queries (beta): the follow-up questions AI asks behind its answers
It’s useful data. But it’s a dashboard, not an action. Closing the Mention Gap means you have to go out and earn those mentions yourself. Since October 2026, Surfer’s recommendations suggest off-site mentions to pursue, but Surfer doesn’t build them for you.
Prompt tracking also depends on the plan. The Standard plan tracks 25 prompts, refreshed weekly, in ChatGPT only. Daily refresh starts on Pro.
2. Improve Existing Pages (Content Audit)
The audit scans the pages you already have and ranks which ones to fix first. It shows the content score, position and traffic for each page, grouped by directory. Higher plans add rank-drop alerts and a cannibalization report.
You still have to rewrite each flagged page.
3. Create Content that Ranks (Content Editor)
This is what Surfer is best known for. You write inside Surfer, and a live Content Score goes up as you cover the right topics and terms. In 2026 Surfer added an AI SEO Content Score that grades for both Google and AI search, plus AI-assisted outlines and writing.
The Content Editor grades you while you write. It doesn’t write and publish finished articles for you on a schedule.
4. Find Topics & Ideas (Topical Map)
This module suggests what to write next, based on what your audience searches for and the gaps in your coverage. It’s helpful when you run out of ideas, but every suggestion becomes another article on your team’s to-do list.
Surfer MCP and the Surfy agent
Surfer MCP connects Surfer data to outside AI agents, and it left beta in October 2026. Surfer’s homepage also promotes a Surfy Agent that would write, optimize and publish content. As of November 2026 it’s still marked “soon”.
Surfer SEO pricing (2026)
Surfer’s plans run from $49 to $299 a month when billed yearly, and the full year is charged upfront. Monthly billing costs up to 17% more.
| Plan | Price (billed yearly) | AI prompts tracked | Documents | Team seats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Discovery | $49/mo | None | 120 | 1 |
| AI Search Analytics | $82/mo | 50 (daily) | None | 5 |
| Standard | $99/mo | 25 (weekly, ChatGPT only) | 360 | 3 |
| Pro | $182/mo | 50 (daily) | 360 | 5 |
| Peace of Mind | $299/mo | 100 (daily) | Unlimited* | 10 |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom |
*Subject to Surfer’s fair-use policy. Prices as listed on surfer.ai on November 3, 2026.
What to watch for:
- The $82 plan is tracking only. AI Search Analytics shows your AI visibility but includes no content documents. To track and write, you need Pro ($182/mo) or higher.
- Hands-on help costs extra. Personalized onboarding and a dedicated success manager are only on Peace of Mind ($299/mo). Other plans get 24-hour support, Monday to Friday.
- Writers aren’t included. Every plan still needs someone to write, edit and publish. If that’s a freelancer or an employee, their cost sits on top of the subscription.
Surfer SEO pros and cons
Surfer is well rated by its users. Its site lists 4.8/5 on G2, 4.9/5 on Capterra and 4.2/5 on Trustpilot. Its weak spots show up when you don’t have a team to run it.
Pros
- Excellent live content scoring for writers
- Detailed AI visibility data, including Mention Gap and sentiment
- Content audit that ranks which pages to fix first
- Integrations with WordPress, Google Docs, Contentful and Zapier, depending on plan
- A large community and plenty of training material
Cons
- You do all the work: writing, editing, publishing and outreach
- A learning curve. You have to interpret scores and recommendations and act on them
- No citation or backlink building. Surfer finds the gaps but doesn’t close them
- AI tracking on lower plans is limited (Standard: 25 prompts, weekly, ChatGPT only)
- Dedicated support only on the $299/month plan
- Annual plans are charged upfront
Who is Surfer SEO good for?
Surfer is built for large brands, agencies and in-house SEO teams who want control over every piece of content. If you have writers and an SEO lead with time to work through recommendations each week, Surfer gives them excellent guidance.
It’s a poor fit for:
- Small businesses without an SEO team
- Busy owners who don’t have hours each week to write and optimize
- Companies that want results delivered, not a checklist to work through
If that sounds like you, you need something that does the work instead of grading it.
The best Surfer SEO alternative: RankGPT
RankGPT is a done-for-you AI growth service. Surfer hands you a checklist. RankGPT does the whole job: it tracks your AI rankings, writes and publishes content to your site and builds the citations that get AI models to recommend you.
How RankGPT works
- Register and connect your website once. Setup takes about 2 minutes, and a free onboarding call helps you do it.
- Full auto is on from day one. RankGPT maps your competitors and builds a ranking plan for your business.
- Content gets written and published for you. The Auto Content Agent writes optimized posts aimed at the gaps competitors leave open. It schedules them and publishes them to your site automatically.
- Citations get built for you. The Citation Builder gets your brand mentioned on sources AI models trust. The more places that mention you, the more AI models trust you and recommend you.
- You watch your rankings climb. The Rankings page shows where you appear in ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI, Claude, Perplexity, Grok and Copilot, with a summary for each AI model.
You don’t need SEO skills or a content team, and you don’t have to touch anything week to week.
RankGPT pricing
| Plan | Price | Projects | Prompts tracked | Posts written and published | Citation Builder |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ignite | $249/mo | 1 | 150 | 30 per month | Included |
| Ascend | $399/mo | 3 | 300 | 60 per month | Included, faster and more citations |
Both plans include a dedicated onboarding call and free expert support by meeting, chat and email. Plans are billed monthly, and you can start a free trial.
RankGPT also has a Spark $99/mo plan for new businesses making less than $10k a month.
Compare that with Surfer. For $299/month, Surfer’s top self-serve plan tracks 100 prompts and gives you a dedicated manager. You still write and publish every article. For $249/month, RankGPT tracks 150 prompts and delivers 30 published posts. It also builds citations, which isn’t part of any listed Surfer plan.
RankGPT vs Surfer SEO
The difference comes down to who does the work: with Surfer it’s you, and with RankGPT it’s the AI.
| RankGPT | Surfer SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Business owners, no SEO experience needed | Content marketers, SEOs and agencies |
| What it is | Done-for-you AI growth service | A tool you operate yourself |
| Who does the work | Agentic AI does it for you | You write and optimize using its tips |
| Content creation | Writes and auto-publishes 30–60 posts/month | Scores and guides your writing; you publish |
| Ease of use | Simple, no skills needed | You interpret recommendations and act on them |
| Authority and citations | Builds citations for you | Suggests mentions to pursue; doesn’t build them |
| AI engines tracked | ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, Copilot | ChatGPT and Gemini, among others; Standard plan is ChatGPT only |

| Setup and support | 1-on-1 onboarding call on every plan | Self-serve; dedicated manager only at $299/mo |

| Best for | Owners who want results delivered | Teams that want best-in-class on-page optimization |
Other Surfer SEO alternatives
If you want another hands-on tool rather than a done-for-you service, these are the names that come up most:
- Clearscope: content optimization and briefs, popular with enterprise content teams
- Frase: research, briefs and AI writing in one editor
- Semrush: an all-in-one SEO suite covering keywords, backlinks and site audits
All three are tools you operate, like Surfer. You’ll still need someone to write, publish and build authority.
Final verdict
Surfer SEO is an excellent tool for SEO professionals. It tells you exactly what to fix and grades your writing better than almost anything else. But it hands you a checklist, and someone on your team has to work through it.
RankGPT gets you to the same goal, showing up in Google and AI answers, without the work. It writes and publishes your content, builds your citations and tracks your rankings in every major AI model. Every plan includes 1-on-1 onboarding.
If you don’t have an SEO team, or you’d rather spend your time running your business, RankGPT is the better choice.

Surfer SEO FAQ
How much does Surfer SEO cost?
Surfer costs $49 to $299 a month billed yearly, with custom Enterprise pricing. Tracking and writing together starts on the Pro plan at $182 a month.
Is Surfer SEO worth it?
Yes, if you have an SEO team that will use its recommendations every week. If you don’t, you’ll be paying for a checklist nobody works through. A done-for-you option like RankGPT is a better fit.
Does Surfer SEO write articles for you?
Surfer offers AI-assisted outlines and writing inside its Content Editor, but you still review, finish and publish the content. Its Surfy agent, which would publish content, is still marked “coming soon.” RankGPT writes and publishes 30 to 60 posts a month automatically.
Does Surfer SEO track ChatGPT rankings?
Yes. Surfer’s AI Tracker monitors brand mentions in ChatGPT and Gemini, among others. The Standard plan tracks 25 prompts in ChatGPT only, with weekly refresh.
Does Surfer SEO build backlinks or citations?
No. Surfer focuses on your own pages and can suggest mentions to pursue, but it doesn’t build them. RankGPT’s Citation Builder does this for you.
What is the best Surfer SEO alternative?
For business owners without an SEO team, RankGPT is the best Surfer alternative. It automates content, citations and AI rank tracking.
